Latest Update: New “Him-Chandigarh” Township Planned Near Chandigarh Border
Description
Shimla / Solan: Himachal Pradesh is moving forward with an ambitious plan to develop a world-class township near the Chandigarh–Himachal border, aiming to boost housing, jobs, and modern urban amenities for residents and investors alike.
The proposed township, tentatively named “Him-Chandigarh,” will be built in the Shitalpur area of Solan district, bordering the industrial hub of Baddi. The state cabinet has approved the transfer of about 3,400 bighas of land to the Housing Department to kick-start the project, and additional common land (about 5,000–6,000 bighas) is being assessed for consolidation through digital land surveys and coordination with revenue authorities.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the Himachal Pradesh Housing and Urban Development Authority (HIMUDA) to finalize planning and work with stakeholders to bring the township to life. Government officials say the new city will offer world-class residential and retail spaces, with modern infrastructure designed to attract both local and external investments.
However, there are mixed reactions on the ground. Some nearby villages have reported resistance from farmers unwilling to give up their land, arguing that forced acquisition would disrupt livelihoods and destroy fertile agricultural areas. Local leaders have demanded meaningful consultations before any land moves forward.
The Him-Chandigarh project is part of a broader state initiative to plan satellite townships and urban hubs around key regions, including another township proposed near Kangra, aimed at creating economic growth and meeting rising housing demand in Himachal Pradesh.
Stay tuned for updates as this major development progresses.
